We’re Going Home! — sorta

We had another tough night of sleep. My tummy was upset and kept waking me up. That also kept waking Khivan up, along with her crazy dreams. The street noise on a Friday night didn’t help either. Anyway, eventually our alarms went off at 5am, we got dressed, packed our final belongings, and grabbed a taxi for the airport.

We got there plenty early, and there was no line to check our bags. We had breakfast at a coffee shop with free wifi, proceeded pretty quickly through security despite the long line, and then sat at our gate for a while. Boarding was a bit delayed because our plane hadn’t arrived. Once on the plane, we were delayed further because who knows why, maybe we didn’t get the signal from control. Our flight from Lima was scheduled to leave in an hour and this flight was supposed to be 70 mins. Not off to a good start.

The flight situation turned out fine. Since our next leg was through Avianca Airlines also, they knew about the delay and waited for us. In fact, that flight left over an hour late as they waited for all the late people. It was a 2-4–2 seat arrangement, so we got to sit in the two-seat aisle by ourselves. Khivan got the window, and I got the aisle just like we both prefer! I watched Insurgent and Man Up, both of which I enjoyed, to my surprise. Khivan’s entertainment system wasn’t working very well, so she alternated between reading and attempting to sleep. We got fed on the flight too, but it wasn’t anything to write home about.

We had a 5 hour layover in San Salvador. We bought day passes to the Avianca VIP lounge and hung out there enjoying the all-you-can-eat and all-you-can-drink, including adult beverages. They had a really good salad bar, paninis, yogurt, fruit, and nuts. I got to watch the Notre dame and Georgia Tech football game, which was crappy until the end, when GT made a good run at it. The lounge provided good wifi too, which we used primarily to look into booking a hotel for our 6 hour layover in SFO. However, we decided against a hotel room in the end because it would have cost over $150 plus transportation. Our time in the lounge passed fairly quickly as we had many modes of entertainment.

On the way to SFO, we had an empty seat in our row. There was no seat-back entertainment though, so I slept almost the whole time, save for the meal that I wasn’t hungry for, while Khivan read for almost the entire 5 hour flight.

Our six-hour layover in SFO was from 1230am-630am. Not exactly my idea of fun. We lounged around here and there. Then we heard on the intercom that a coffee shop was open from 12am-4am, so we got a triple espresso at 330am. We were so tired though that it didn’t have much effect. Shortly after finishing our coffee, we found a spot to nap and slept until 430am. I would have loved to sleep longer, but my hand kept falling asleep and waking me up. How ironic is that?! The Canada Air counter opened just before 5am, so we headed over there to re-check our luggage to Vancouver. Then we mosied over to the gate, where we laid around and read until boarding. That flight from SFO to YVR was the emptiest I’ve ever been on! There were more empty rows than people, and almost as many people in first class as coach. Both of us read for the entire three-hour flight.

Angad picked us up, and we went to his house and had alu paranthas for breakfast. Yum! Then we did laundry and took a mini nap. We weren’t really intending to take a nap, but we couldn’t help it as we waited for the laundry to finish. We repacked everything, and then Angad drove us to Seattle while we slept. It was lovely. Not sure we could have made that drive ourselves with how tired we were.

When we got to Seattle, it quickly became a mad house as usual. Hardeep, Guneet, Amit, and Mandeep were already there. We added four more. Then just after we ate a late lunch, Sorena and kids and Molena and family joined, adding another 9 people. The Seahawks game came on at 530pm, and it was a lot of alternate cheering and booing for the next three hours. The Hawks lost to the Packers unfortunately, but it was a fun, close game. We left right after and spent the night at Inderpal’s. A comfortable bed and no outside noise were incredibly welcome!!
